Indonesia’s Global Tourism Index Jumped from Ranking 44th to 32nd!

Ever since the COVID-19 Pandemic began in 2020, global tourism sectors have greatly suffered. This situation has severely caused a drop in many countries’ global tourism index, including Indonesia. And although COVID-19 has nearly shut down Indonesian tourism, the country has done its best to improve.

And the good news is all those efforts are paying off!

On 24 May 2022, the World Economic Forum released the most recent report on the global tourism index called the Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021. And Indonesia’s tourism shows a rapid development with its rank jumping from 44th to 32nd place out of 117 countries!

In fact, the data show that Indonesia’s global tourism index ranked 2nd highest among its neighboring Southeast Asian nation. Indonesia also successfully ranked 8th amongst countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

However, what exactly does this index tell you about a country? How is it relevant for travelers and the tourism business? Well, read along and find out because E-Visa Bali is here to help you understand this topic!

What is the Global Tourism Index?

As the name implies, a global tourism index is a kind of catalog meant to analyze and compare the quality of tourism in a country. And, know that there are many kinds of global tourism indexes in the world. Each of them are made by various organizations with unique methods and analyses.

One of these global tourism indexes is the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) from the World Economic Fourm. This index seeks to analyze factors and policies that promote sustainable and resilient Travel and Tourism sector development.

The TTDI became a great source of reference for governments around the world for their tourism development plans. Moreover, it also promotes positive competition between countries to keep improving their tourism sector – and thus their economic development.

How is Global Tourism Index Relevant for Tourists and Investors?

The global tourism index may be complex, but it certainly can tell you a lot of things about a country.

World Economic Forum’s TTDI 2021 for example is an analysis based on 100 different indicators grouped into 16 categories. One of those categories is Health and Hygiene which discusses things like accessible healthcare, clean water, and basic sanitation.

Another category it discusses is Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Readiness. Here, many indicators discussed involves the accessibility of internet and the use of digital platforms for tourism-related activities like accessible accommodations, restaurants, and leisure activities services.

There are many other things the TTDI discusses. Things like evaluating visa requirements to determine International Openness or analyses of accommodation and transportation prices to determine Price Competitiveness. There is even an analysis of transportation infrastructures like airport connectivity, quality of roads, train services, etc.

You can understand so many things from these data for your plans. Perhaps you want to visit a country with higher internet connectivity or easier visa requirements. Or maybe you want to invest in business opportunities in countries that need development in some aspect of their tourism.

In any case, getting to know a country’s global tourism index may help you be more confident and prepare better expectations when planning a visit to another country. This is especially true, if you are planning to stay there for a long term for tourism, work, or even invest in a business.
