What’s so special about Digital Nomad Visa Indonesia, you ask? Well, please read along because E-Visa Bali is here to all common questions about this upcoming digital nomad visa!
Why Do We Need A New Indonesian Digital Nomad Visa?
As you might have already known, Indonesia has re-opened its airports for tourists globally since March 2022. And by June 2022, Indonesia has even issued a convenient Visa of Arrival (VOA) permit for tourists from 72 countries for easier travel to Indonesia.
However, as convenient as this VOA goes, this visa, along with most other Indonesian visas, does not answer many of digital nomads’ problems in Indonesia. Those problems include two primary problems that digital nomads and remote workers face during their stay in the country.
First, you can’t really stay in Indonesia any longer than 6 months at most with an Indonesian visa. For example, Indonesia’s VOA would only allow you a stay of 2 months at most – and that’s already with a visa extension. While indeed there are other tourist visas, those visas are only valid for up to 180 days even with multiple extensions.
The second problem digital nomads face in Indonesia is that they are trapped in a legal grey zone. This is because all Indonesian visas are legally built purely for tourism visit purposes. Foreigners who want to work in Indonesia should instead apply for a Temporary Stay Permit (KITAS) and be subjected to local and/or national tax.

In any case, this is a legal problem for digital nomads and remote workers in Indonesia. This is because while they do come to Indonesia for tourism purposes, they are technically also working in Indonesia – even if they do so remotely for companies outside of Indonesia. So, how will this new visa fix these problems?
What’s So Great About Digital Nomad Visa Indonesia?
The new digital nomad visa Indonesia is a gamechanger in the tourism sector. Not only will it tackle digital nomads’ problems in Indonesia, but it also adds great opportunities for local economies.
With this new digital nomad visa, no longer will length of stay become a problem for digital nomads. This is because the visa is designed for long-term stays. The visa will allow them to a valid stay up to a whopping 5 years in Indonesia!
Furthermore, this digital nomad visa also seeks to resolve the legal issue regarding remote workers and digital nomads in Indonesia. In fact, this new visa will make digital nomads in Indonesia work easier and safer in a more convenient way.
A digital nomad visa could even exempt foreigners working remotely from Indonesia from paying taxes. The only simple condition is that the company you are working for is not a company based in Indonesia.
With longer length of stay and lesser financial burdens, tourists could stay and spend more to experience tourism in Indonesia. And this will also potentially promote better development of local economies’ competitiveness.

So, When Can I Get This Indonesian Digital Nomad Visa?
Unfortunately, know that you won’t be able to get your long digital nomad work holiday adventure in Bali yet. After all, digital nomad visa Indonesia has not been implemented yet.
Why is it not available yet? Well, mostly because of COVID-19 concerns. In fact, the proposed digital nomad visa is not even a “new” visa plan at all. This visa was first proposed by the Indonesian Tourism Minister in 2021. However, it was rejected due to the raging pandemic concerns at the time.
Though, don’t be disappointed yet! Because the COVID-19 situation has become more manageable in Indonesia this year. Thus, 2022 is the perfect time for the official relaunch of this new visa plan as the disease transition into endemic.
In fact, Indonesian Tourism Minister, Sandiaga Uno, state that the authorization of digital nomad visa Indonesia is well underway. The even better news is that the process is reaching its last discussion phase. So far, the regulation has garnered much support from public officials.
Once this new visa is available, Sandiaga Uno hopes that this plan will bring 3.6 million foreign remote workers to Indonesia. He also hopes that it provide one million jobs for Indonesians and positively impact the development of the local economy.
Conclusion: Bright Future Awaits Digital Nomads in Indonesia!
The upcoming digital nomad visa Indonesia is a gamechanger and it will provide millions of digital nomads with great opportunities for a long-term remote work holiday experience in the best tourist spots of Indonesia, like Bali!
